Though widely accepted throughout the industry, Zahn cup viscosity measurement is difficult to use as the benchmark for process quality control. Too much is dependent on operator input-reflex, timing, interpretation, etc.-resulting in variations in measurement from operator to operator and even batch to batch within a shift.

Inaccurate viscosity measurements will lead to improper solvent additions. And changes in ambient temperature and other process variables can lead to changes in material temperature, making proper solvent loading even more of a challenge. If solvent is not added accurately, an otherwise good batch is at risk of falling out of specification.

Finally, variation in viscosity across a web or strip can cause wet film-build discrepancies from edge to edge. Often these are offset by adjustments in roller speed and pressure, requiring the addition of more material to ensure that the thinnest areas are still within specification. But such remedies only increase operating cost with no correlation in quality.
